MODULE 06

How Thai Words Are Built

Thai words are built from patterns, not random symbols. Once you see the pattern, reading gets easier fast.

Why There Are No Spaces

Thai writing normally does not put spaces between every word. Spaces are mostly used to separate full phrases, clauses, or sentences.

ฉันกินข้าวแล้ว

This line has multiple words, but no spaces between each one.

Basic Syllable Formula

Initial consonant + Vowel pattern (around consonant) + Final consonant (optional) + Tone mark (optional)

A single consonant can be a syllable, but most words combine these pieces into one readable sound block.

How to Read the Pieces

กา = ก + -า
เก = เ- + ก
กิน = ก + -ิ + น
เก่ง = เ- + ก + ่ + ง

Vowels can appear before, above, below, or after the consonant in writing, even though you still read it as one syllable.
